Music

"Music is in a world within itself, it is a language we all understand" Stevie Wonder
Intent

At St Andrew’s, the music curriculum is intended to implement a life-long passion for music.  Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging. In our school, music brings all pupils together through the shared endeavour of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and, through the love of listening to friends and fellow pupils, performing. The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust.

What does our approach to Music look like?

At St Andrews, we follow the Surrey Arts Charanga scheme of work. The scheme is passionate about children’s music learning and its potential to help them grow up as kind, curious, and open-minded young people, who are sensitive and knowledgeable about music and the arts.

Throughout the year each year group completes 3 different units from Charanga’s Model Music Curriculum which follows a differentiated, spiral approach to musical learning which responds to the national requirements for musical education. Within each unit of learning, students revisit existing knowledge and skills and then build upon and extend them incrementally. In this manner, learning is consolidated and augmented, allowing for increasing musical confidence, while constantly being gently challenged to go further. The curriculum allows the children to develop the following musical skills:

  • Performance
  • Singing
  • Pulse & Rhythm
  • Composition
  • Notation
  • Listening & Music Appreciation
  • Knowledge of Significant People

In the Summer Term children from Year 2 upwards will have one half term of whole class instrument tuition using the Charanga instrument courses.

The Music Model Curriculum is also used within our weekly assemblies.  The 6 main periods of music are covered throughout the year with examples of each music period being played as entrance and exit music with a power point of facts about each period and composer.
